Mid-February I made the trip to Columbus, Ohio to photograph a departure. As to be expected, it was a bit different than the homecomings I have documented. Nevertheless, I was honored this family chose me to be their OpLove photographer and grateful to provide them with these memories to cherish while he’s serving our country. Thank you.
After we parted ways, I stood outside my van, parked at the very top of the parking garage. I was directly between two runways. I sat there for about a half hour, watching the planes come and go. I still had over a three hour drive ahead of me, but feeling the vibration from the planes, hearing the whir of the engines, and watching something man-made soar into the sky was breathtaking and indescribable. I was transfixed and had never witnessed anything like that previously. I’m a thirtysomething and I’ve yet to fly. I know, right? I have set foot in airports half a dozen times, literally. I wanted to be a fighter pilot when I was a little girl. My dream career goals have changed a tad bit since then, but I am still fascinated by airplanes. I could have sat there all night watching the world move around me.

I drove to Dayton, Ohio at the beginning of February for an early morning OpLove homecoming session. The entire place was so full of love. It was hard to resist hugging every single person I saw. Hope and gratitude and love filled the air.

This is my third year being an affiliate photographer for Operation: Love ReUnited, but it was only January when I received my first inquiry for an OpLove session. This was a last minute, late night homecoming, and I am so grateful to have been a part of such an intimate moment. It truly is an honor. It’s a good thing I had a camera in front of my face – no one could see my mascara-raccoon eyes from the tears. <3
